Right, people, the Academy Awards nominations are out. Roma and The Favourite share the most with ten each and as usual, there have been a few surprises. Here below is a reminder of the Trouper’s Predictions, plus those (in bold) he didn’t predict:

Best Picture

BlacKkKlansman

Black Panther

Bohemian Rhapsody

Green Book

The Favourite

Roma

A Star Is Born

Vice

If Beale Street Could Talk (if there are nine in the category)

First Man (if there are 10)

Trouper Verdict: the Academy only decided to go with eight nominations this year, which is a bit of a surprise but meant there was no room for First Man or If Beale Street Could Talk, amongst other potentials.

Best Director

Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born

Alfonso Cuaron – Roma

Yorgos Lanthimos – The Favourite

Spike Lee – BlacKkKlansman

Adam McKay – Vice

Pawel Pawlikowski – Cold War

Trouper Verdict: the biggest snub of the nominations goes to Bradley Cooper. Quite how his film could get nine nominations and not one for Best Director is a shocker.

Best Actress

Yalitza Aparicio – Roma

Glenn Close – The Wife

Olivia Colman – The Favourite

Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born

Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Trouper Verdict: It looks like a two way race between Close and Gaga, but lovely to see first-timer Yalitza Aparicio recognised.

Best Actor

Christian Bale – Vice

Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born

Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody

Viggo Mortensen – Green Book

Robert Redford – The Old Man And The Gun

Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate

Trouper Verdict: Bale and Malek look like the ones to beat.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams – Vice

Claire Foy – First Man

Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk

Emma Stone – The Favourite

Rachel Weisz – The Favourite

Marina de Tavira – Roma

Trouper Verdict: At one stage, there was talk that Claire Foy was not only going to be nominated, but would win the darn thing. How things can change over the months leading up to Awards Season.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali – Green Book

Timothee Chalomet – Beautiful Boy

Adam Driver – BlacKkKlansman

Richard E Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Sam Rockwell – Vice

Sam Elliott – A Star Is Born

Trouper Verdict: Good to see the legendary Sam Elliott get a nomination finally, but probably at the expense of current golden boy Chalomet.

So there you have it! All we have to do now is wait until 26 Feb for the ceremony itself!
