BAFTA Award

Awards Season has got up a full head of steam up. Last night, the film BAFTAs were handed out and there may be a few indications among the winners about who will go away with the Oscar in a fortnight’s time.

Here are the main categories, together with Showbiz Trouper’s all important verdicts!

Best film

Winner: Roma

BlackkKlansman

The Favourite

Green Book

A Star Is Born

Trouper Verdict: Roma was not in the Globes’ Best Film category (as it was in a foreign language), but has easily romped home with this one. The Favourite has to take consolation with…

Outstanding British film

Winner: The Favourite

Beast

Bohemian Rhapsody

McQueen

Stan & Ollie

You Were Never Really Here

Trouper Verdict: With The Favourite taking this over Bohemian Rhapsody, does that signal a nail in the coffin for any pretentions the Queen movie had in the Oscar Best Picture race?

Director

Winner: Alfonso Cuaron – Roma

Spike Lee – BlacKkKlansman

Paweł Pawlikowski – Cold War

Yorgos Lanthimos – The Favourite

Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born

Trouper Verdict: Cuaron is seemingly unstoppable in this category and deservedly so. The Oscar is his to lose. At least the British Academy nominated Bradley Cooper, though.

Leading actor

Winner: Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody

Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born

Christian Bale – Vice

Steve Coogan – Stan & Ollie

Viggo Mortensen – Green Book

Trouper Verdict: This is a blow for British actor, Christian Bale, and may be a sign he misses out on the Oscar. Rami Malek has been on a roll ever since his Globes’ win and is building himself up quite a bit of momentum towards Oscar night.

Leading actress

Winner: Olivia Colman – The Favourite

Glenn Close – The Wife

Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born

Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Viola Davis – Widows

Trouper Verdict: hometown girl Olivia Colman – blistering towards National Treasure status – was always the… forgive… favourite for this award. It may well be a different story and similarly partisan when the American Glenn Close is on home soil in a fortnight.

Supporting actor

Winner: Mahershala Ali – Green Book

Adam Driver – BlackkKlansman

Richard E Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Sam Rockwell – Vice

Timothee Chalamet – Beautiful Boy

Trouper Verdict: This was Richard E. Grant’s best chance at a biggie. His hopes for Oscar glory are now seriously dented.

Supporting actress

Winner: Rachel Weisz – The Favourite

Amy Adams – Vice

Claire Foy – First Man

Emma Stone – The Favourite

Margot Robbie – Mary Queen of Scots

Trouper Verdict: Weisz was on home soil and despite being the best part of The Favourite in ST’s view, did not have the powerhouse Regina King in the category alongside her. Weisz won’t get as easy a ride on Oscar night.
